The Hudson River Ecological Study evolved in size and complexity since the mid-1960s. Early fisheries studies (Perlmutter et al. 1966, 1967, 1968; Carlson and McCann 1969; Raytheon 1971; QLM 1971a, 1971b) approached the state-of-the-art by most standards of that time. As tile level of environmental awareness heightened in the United States during the early 1970s, the scope of the Hudson River Ecolog- Page 8 ical study expanded concomitantly. By 1974, it had increased from primarily near-field surveys with fixed sampling stations in the vicinity of several power plants to a monumental effort focused on the entire tidal portions of the river.
