Unlike any of the later poems, almost all of these were revised :tensively f r o m their original writing. As a series, they begin >wly, irregularly, the first poems, as has been noted, coming ily intermittently. They pick u p in April and May of 1953, len almost half of the volume was composed, until susnded and poems withheld or abandoned as the series reatened to become too diffuse and take on the entire area of 2 American West that the poet had proposed to himself in rlier projects like West and Red, White £sf Black—so that there re actually many more poems written than appear in the lume.
